Open Stories

The Crossfit Open
From Mike Ware

What is your Favorite thing about the Open?

One of the best parts of the Open is watching someone do something they have not done before or did not think they could: first bar muscle up, first push up or first pull up. The look of accomplishment on the person’s face is remarkable.

Why should someone do the Open?

It is a great test of all the sweat and blood we have put in to get fitter and improve our lives. At first glance the Open workouts may appear to be a bit daunting and overwhelming. We all need to keep in mind that the workouts are scalable/modifiable so anyone can do them. A couple of Opens back I was rehabbing a bulging disc in my lower back and was able to do all the Open workouts. Not Rx or even scaled but Derek had modifications that made them doable for me.

Why should someone come to Friday Night Lights?

The atmosphere and camaraderie at the Open is amazing. The folks that show up, whether to do the workouts or just cheer the other folks on are fantastic. The energy level is off the charts.

Why should someone sign up to officially do the Open?

For me, signing up to “officially” do the Open workouts is a great way to compare where my fitness level is with other guys that are my age worldwide. It is also way cool to think about all the folks around the globe doing the same workouts.

I do not really have any specific memories of the Open. They have all been amazing experiences: from the first one I did with about 6 months of CrossFit under my belt to the last one.

I am crazy stoked about this year. I have been working very hard to improve my fitness and CrossFit abilities. Very much looking forward to see how I do and stack up against other guys in my age group.

For me, CrossFit is a journey with the Open being one of the coolest stops along the way.
