Why Do the Open?

Why Do the Open?

-by Dana Monroe

Why do the open?

Because you can.  We are fortunate enough to be able to compete with one another.  We can use our physical and mental health to complete round after round and rep after rep. You don’t have to be the strongest nor the fastest, you just have to finish and yet you do, every day.  That’s why you should do the open; because you can.  Often our workouts honor those that have served.  With the 2018 Open I would like to honor those with chronic illnesses that do not have the physical capabilities to compete.  Several years ago I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease and Ulcerative Colitis, neither have a cure.  This puts a huge strain on my physical and mental health.  When I was forced to take a break from CrossFit I realized what CrossFit did for me, mentally and physically.  Every time I walk through the Train door I count my lucky stars that I showed up that day. I probably won’t PR and I will definitely come across that finish line close to last but that doesn’t matter because I SHOWED UP!  I see my fellow Lyme warriors not able to get out of bed or UC patients not able to leave the house.  So I will fight for them with this Open.  I am trying to raise $1 for every pound I lift during the Open.  100% of funds raised will be donated to the Oregon Lyme Disease Network.  Please consider donating and look for me (in the Lyme green shirt) sucking wind and struggling during this Open but guess what, that doesn’t matter because I am going to SHOW UP!
